This past Saturday, we celebrated the end of the growing season with our annual Fall Harvest Day in the learning garden at Katchkie Farm in Kinderhook NY. We were greeted with beyond perfect weather and welcomed over 65 members of the community onto the farm to enjoy a day of garlic planting, lawn games, pumpkin decorating, a garden scavenger hunt, and a cooking lesson by Sylvia Center Chef Instructor Selina. As all celebrations should, we had an array of Sylvia Center dishes to share and warm our spirits including our fresh kale, carrot, and apple confetti salad, butternut squash chili using squashes from our very own garden, homemade cornbread, and a generous donation of apple cider from Migliorelli Farm in Tivoli, NY. In true Sylvia Center fashion, we also fired up our pizza oven and participants made personalized pizzas using seasonal ingredients from local farms, a choice of cheese, and sauces including an end of season tomato sauce made from tomatoes, herbs, onions, and garlic harvested all from the Learning Garden. The day also included several special activities from members of the community including a compost build with volunteer Kevin McDermott, yoga in the garden with volunteer Lindsey Wernquest, and a birding walk with Chris Frank and Marian Sole, local birders with the Alan Devoe Bird Club. This day was a perfect way to give thanks and celebrate the learning garden and wouldn’t have been possible without all the volunteers, staff, and participants that made their way to visit Katchkie Farm this past Saturday. Thank you to all who made this day possible and we look forward to celebrating the arrival of spring with our Spring Planting Day.
Thank you all for joining us on Fall Harvest Day!
