“I teach my parents the recipes I learn in my Sylvia Center class!” an elementary student told Rongling, current Chef Assistant and Teen Culinary Apprenticeship (TCA) program alumna.
The Sylvia Center students, even in the youngest grades, are advocating for healthy food choices in their homes and communities. But it doesn’t stop there! Young people of all ages–elementary through high school–are inspired to make healthy decisions confidently and share what they’ve learned with others.
In fact, our students are so committed to our program that one-quarter (25%) of our chef educators and assistants are former program participants. “The program and the mission that is being taught was so inspiring that I have been with the organization ever since graduating the TCA program in 2016,” says Sam, a current Chef Educator.
With the rate of obesity among children and adolescents tripling in the past three decades in New York (NYS Department of Health, 2021), The Sylvia Center’s work is more relevant than ever. Since the return to in person programming this past summer, The Sylvia Center has seen a 35% growth in number of students from pre-pandemic levels. We can meet the increased demand, but only with your help.
The Sylvia Center students and educators are the next generation of leaders in food education, access, and equity.
