In the company of family and friends, The Sylvia Center’s 2024 teen apprentices marked the end of their Teen Culinary Apprenticeship Program–and their accomplishments–in a special certificate ceremony, with many participants ready to embark on their college journeys. Taking place at TSC’s Bronx office, the event also featured remarks made by TSC founder Liz Newmark, Executive Director Barbara Glassman, Teen Programs Manager Benia Darius, Alumni Coordinator Destiny Smith and Chef Educator Cara Conaboy. Our TCA students have truly excelled, not just at cooking remarkable dishes, but also in developing essential life skills.

This past year, four cohorts completed the program, with 15–20 students from each school: Claremont International High School, Richmond Hill High School (RHHS), The School of Human Rights, and Brooklyn International High School. At the end of the program, Sylvia Center Chef Educators prepared the students to teach our Cooks for Health Elementary curriculum to younger youth through the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). SYEP is a youth employment program, working at sites across the five boroughs, connecting NYC young people between the ages of 14–24 with career opportunities, paid work experience and high-school credits.

This year was particularly special, as TSC Chef Educators Benia, Cara and Emma developed and introduced culturally relevant recipes to the program. Students experimented with recipes including plant-based versions of Pupusas, Mofongo, Maafe, Jollof Rice, Biryani, Thai green curry, crêpes and more. Dishes with which they are familiar, both culturally and at home, and–more simply–that they feel excited about.

The Sylvia Center empowers youths with skills for success in the kitchen and beyond. The problem-solving, teamwork, and creativity they use and develop across the program are tools that will go on to empower them in any life situation. It’s a joy to celebrate their growth and bright futures. Congratulations again to the TCA class of 2024!
