After our students complete the Teen Culinary Apprenticeship (TCA) and Work-Based Learning programs, we recognize the importance of maintaining meaningful connections between alumni. So we created the The Sylvia Center Alumni Network, which we piloted last year as a safe space for past participants to stay connected with TSC, and with one another, while sharing valuable resources as a group.
The success of Alumni Network events relies on creating inclusive, fun environments where alumni can explore different cuisines and find new ways to nourish themselves. So far, TSC has hosted two events: a professional development webinar and an in-person Pizza Palooza cooking class, both of which were warmly received by attendees. The most recent event was a Ramen Cook-Along, held at our Bronx office, where alumni sharpened their knife skills, explored their curiosity for Japanese cuisine and enjoyed plating warm bowls of ramen filled with fresh ginger, scallions, a variety of vegetables and homemade broth.
“Even though I’m a finicky eater, being a part of this organization has made me more willing to try new foods and exposed me to a wide variety of cuisines. With that said, I believe I’m a great example of how being a part of the Teen Culinary Apprenticeship program can pave the way for young people to go, grow and glow!”
— Destiny Smith
Through this network, our alumni have the opportunity to exchange ideas, share life updates, offer feedback to improve our programs and explore career and learning opportunities. Spearheaded by Destiny Smith, a TCA alum and now our Teen and Alumni Programs Coordinator, the network aims to foster a sense of community for former participants and provide them with resources to enrich their social and professional lives. The network also serves as a fun and supportive space where alumni can step away from their daily routines to reconnect with peers.
Looking ahead, Destiny hopes to continue increasing alumni involvement and ensure every participant feels valued and heard. We’re committed to offering resources for professional development, including job search support, resume assistance and recommendation letters. Currently, we’re brainstorming fresh ideas for the upcoming year and creating innovative ways to ensure we create meaningful experiences. We look forward to seeing how our alumni community continues to grow!
