Farm Program Manager Nicole gives a tour of Katchkie farm. She takes us through the greenhouses and Learning Garden to show us the different types of crops that grow there. In our first Full Plate on the Farm Series, Nicole demonstrates a soil experiment to show us the different components that make up soil. There are three different soil particle sizes: sand, silt, and clay. Sand is the largest particle, and clay is the smallest. After putting the soil in the jar, adding water, and shaking it up, leave the jar undisturbed for 6 hours. After 6 hours, you will be able to see the layers of soil within the jar! You can also test the soil to see how much clay is present by forming a ribbon with your hand. This is a fun activity to learn about soil texture and a great introduction to its connection with agriculture.
