Throggs Neck: A Bounty of Produce, Cooking and Community

From June to early November, The Sylvia Center team could be found cooking up delicious, plant-based bites on Saturdays at the Throggs Neck Farmers Market in the Bronx. Organized by the Throggs Neck Community Alliance, and with generous support from Rap4Bronx–who provided fresh fruits and vegetables–the market offered much-needed free produce to the community. TSC Chef Educators Keyla, Abdiel, Chichi and Carelle led engaging cooking demonstrations of flavorful plant-based dishes using produce that was being offered that day.

“People were eager to learn how to make the most of their vegetables! We focused on versatile ingredients like beets and cabbage, providing attendees with practical recipes and tips,” Keyla, TSC’s Community Engagement Specialist, shared. “It was great to see how excited everyone was about cooking, especially the seniors and families with children.”

A connection with local farms also played a crucial role in Rap4Bronx’s sourcing of fresh produce for market attendees The fruits and vegetables came from local farms including Halal Pastures, The Grandpa Farm, Echo Creek Farm, Trinity Farm and Choy Division.

TSC’s table at the farmers market not only satisfied appetites with a selection of plant-powered bites, but also nourished minds with educational resources on gardening and cooking techniques. Participants learned how to make better use of their homegrown produce by utilizing simple ingredients, such as banana peels to fertilize their gardens. Many attendees sought advice on preserving their harvest and honing basic gardening skills, and the tips provided by the TSC team were well-received.

With attendance averaging between 50–100 people, the event was a hit, prompting many attendees to ask, “When are you coming back?” The enthusiasm the community members showed has inspired TSC to explore opportunities for future events, including returning to Throggs Neck next season.

As one delighted attendee noted, “You inspired me to make something different at home. I’m tired of eating plain rice!” Such positive feedback fuels TSC’s dedication to enhancing the local food experience, tying together nutrition, community and fun.
