Thank you for making The Art of Cooking a success!

At this year’s Art of Cooking benefit dinner, supporters of The Sylvia Center gathered together to honor the teens and families we work with in New York City, along with John Unwin, CEO of The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. Throughout the night, supporters mingled with our teen chefs, their families and a cohort from Green City Force, a service corps organization TSC partners with that works with New York City Housing Authority young adults. Guests enjoyed a warm and delicious meal inspired by the teen chefs themselves, as honoree John Unwin shared stories on-stage about his moving experience at Katchkie Farm last fall, when he and his team of chefs spent the day cooking with Sylvia Center teen students.

The teens were recognized for their passion for good food that they share everyday in their homes and communities, and were presented with gifts to help them continue doing so—sets of essential kitchen equipment. For dessert, the teens were surprised with the opportunity to decorate their own cakes with Chef Rob from Great Performances.

With the generosity of our friends, families and supporters, we were able to surpass our fundraising goal at the event this year to raise over $550,000, which will—among other things—allow us to open a new site in 2015. Thank you to everyone who helped us make this year’s Art of Cooking such a success and so much fun!

The Art of Cooking 2013

Thank you to everyone who made The Art of Cooking such a successful, delicious and unforgettable evening!

On Tuesday, October 15th, thanks to the generosity of so many, we raised over $350,000 to fund The Sylvia Center’s Cooks for Health Program in New York City Housing Authority community centers. The event was the perfect moment to honor two early supporters of the Cooks for Health program: Rachael Ray and the Yum-o! organization, and the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City. The evening’s menu was curated by Rozanne Gold and inspired by The Sylvia Center’s seasonal and plant-based curriculum.

Student chefs from the Williamsburg NYCHA community center came and helped prepare hors d’oeuvres — including eggplant mozzarella crostini and green tomato gazpacho — and demonstrated some of the skills they have mastered through The Sylvia Center’s Cooks for Health program. They did a great job and had a blast talking about their favorite foods with Rachael Ray, whose natural enthusiasm and passion for healthy cooking with children inspired the evening.

We are overwhelmed with gratitude, and excited for the future. So many students will learn to cook in the coming year because of your support. Thanks to all for believing so much in the children we work with, and for making it possible for us to continue — and grow! — the work.

Here are just a few snapshots from the evening (click thumbnail to view full photo), and our brand-new video below, followed by special thanks to all our event sponsors, donors and supporters.
